Not good versus evil
The Criminal Profile
Red Dead Redemption 2 asked whether you were a good man. GTA 6 asks what kind of criminal you are — which is a more interesting question, and a much better fit for this series.
Short answer
What is the Criminal Profile in GTA 6?
The Criminal Profile is GTA 6's reputation system, replacing Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor. It does not sort actions into good and evil — it tracks how you operate as a criminal. Efficient robberies, de-escalating confrontations and small courtesies raise it; unnecessary violence and destruction lower it. Violence a mission actually required does not count against you.
What it is
A reputation system that refuses a morality axis
ConfirmedRockstar's Criminal Profile is explicitly not a good/evil meter. It does not divide actions into simple categories. It tracks behavioural patterns, and those patterns influence how NPCs react to you and how parts of the story develop.
The distinction matters. Honor in Red Dead Redemption 2 pulled toward a single moral question, which sat awkwardly with a game about robbing trains. GTA 6 instead measures competence and conduct within a criminal life — whether you are a professional or a liability.
What raises and lowers it
| Action | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Efficient crime and clean robbery completion | Improves your criminal reputation | Getting in and out well is the point. |
| Unnecessary violence | Damages the profile | Violence beyond what the job required. |
| Needless destruction | Damages the profile | Collateral damage counts. |
| Mission-required violence | Neutral | Does not automatically damage the profile. |
| Violence necessary to a robbery | Neutral | The system distinguishes necessity from excess. |
| Disposing of trash properly | Improves | Yes, really — ordinary civic actions register. |
| Feeding animals | Improves | Small courtesies count. |
| De-escalating with dialogue | Improves | Talking someone down instead of shooting them. |
The trash detail is the tell
That putting rubbish in a bin moves the same needle as how you conduct a robbery tells you what this system is really measuring: not virtue, but whether you behave like someone trying not to be noticed.
What it changes
- How the world reacts. NPC responses shift with your profile Confirmed
- Narrative outcomes. The profile influences story development Confirmed
- Crime severity is distinguished. The system separates levels of severity rather than treating all crime alike Confirmed
- De-escalation is a real option. Dialogue choices — taunting or talking nicely — can head off violence Confirmed
The leaked “Honor/Karma” system was this
UnconfirmedAugust 2026 leaks referred to a brand new “honor/karma” mechanic. When the Extended Look aired, it became clear this was the Criminal Profile under a working description. A good example of leak-tier information being directionally right and terminologically wrong.
How to play with it
Nothing suggests a “good” and “bad” path to optimise. Two coherent approaches:
The professional
Mask up, take only what the job needs, use non-lethal shots where lethal ones are not required, de-escalate confrontations, change your appearance and vehicle before the police can build a description. Your profile rises as a competent operator, and Leonida treats you accordingly.
The liability
Maximum violence, maximum destruction, no regard for what the job actually required. The profile drops, NPCs respond to that, and some story beats land differently.
Both are supported. What the system discourages is the GTA V default of treating the open world as a physics toy between missions without any of it ever mattering.
