Cash gates the story
Heists, robberies & money
Money matters more in GTA 6 than in any previous Grand Theft Auto, because for the first time it can stand between you and the next chapter of the story.
Short answer
How do heists work in GTA 6?
GTA 6 robberies range from store holdups to bank heists, and money can gate main-story progress for the first time in the series. Blowing a safe is fast but damages the contents; cracking the combination preserves full value but risks police arriving. Stolen goods go through specialised fences, and Boobie Ike offers laundering.
Money gates progression
You may need to raise a specific amount before the story advances
ConfirmedThis is the structural change. Rockstar has built the campaign so that players may need a particular sum of cash before the main story continues — which turns earning from an optional pursuit into a required one.
It also solves a problem GTA V had, where the protagonists became billionaires halfway through the story while the plot continued to treat them as desperate. Here, being broke is a state the game can actually put you in.
How you earn
- Stealing and selling vehicles
- Robbing businesses
- Store holdups
- Bank heists
Targets can be taken on individually or as a couple, and couple robberies feed the relationship system.
Robbery mechanics
Every robbery is a speed-versus-value decision
ConfirmedYou choose between a quick escape and taking everything. Blowing a safe is faster but damages the valuables inside. Searching for the combination takes longer and preserves the full value. Every extra minute raises the chance of police arriving.
| Method | Speed | Value | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blow the safe | Fast | Reduced — explosives damage the contents | Lower |
| Find the combination | Slow | Full value preserved | Higher — more time on scene |
Getting out
- Many locations have secondary exits. Worth scouting Confirmed
- Police can surround a location and wait. Sitting inside is not a strategy Confirmed
- Masks work if you sequence them. Wear one during the offence, discard it during the getaway Confirmed
- Binoculars are available for reconnaissance beforehand Confirmed
- There is an animation for concealing a weapon before entering a store Confirmed
Roles during a job
In co-op robberies the pair divide the work — one keeps hostages controlled while the other empties the registers — and you switch viewpoint between them with a character selection wheel.
Stealing cars
Car theft has been rebuilt from a single button press into a system with its own difficulty curve.
Vehicles are separated into security tiers
ConfirmedExpensive models are harder to steal. Older vehicles need simple equipment like a slim jim; modern luxury cars need advanced devices such as key-cloning tools. Not every vehicle can be hot-wired, and some are locked behind story progress.
| Vehicle type | Tool | Minigame |
|---|---|---|
| Older / cheaper cars | Slim jim | Timed right-stick inputs |
| Modern luxury cars | Key cloner | Electronic locks defeat the slim jim |
| Occupied vehicles | None | Carjacking still works, with more depth than GTA V |
The WAINK app
Before committing, you can scan a vehicle with WAINK to see its value, registration, lock status, alarm and whether it has tracking Confirmed. It converts car theft from opportunism into target selection.
GPS trackers report you to the police automatically
ConfirmedAdvanced trackers on some vehicles transmit location to law enforcement. You either hold high speed to outrun the response or abandon the car. WAINK warns you in advance — if you check.
Selling, fences and laundering
Specialised fences for different goods
ConfirmedJewellery, vehicles and other valuables each need the appropriate buyer. Vehicle fences also provide information on valuable cars sitting in impound lots — a lead system as well as a sale point.
Damage reduces what you are paid
ConfirmedVisible damage cuts a vehicle's delivery value. Delivering a car in good condition through Vice City's narrow streets is genuinely difficult, which makes the drive part of the job rather than the end of it.
Laundering
Boobie Ike offers laundering schemes for the pair's cash Confirmed. In a game where money gates progression, the character who converts dirty money into usable money is a systems character as much as a story one. More on Boobie Ike →
How this differs from GTA V
| Aspect | GTA V | GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Story gating | None — money never blocked progress | Cash thresholds can gate the main story |
| Robbery scale | A handful of scripted heists plus store holdups | Continuous: stores, businesses, banks, vehicles |
| Car theft | One button on almost anything | Tiered security, tools, and a minigame |
| Selling stolen cars | Los Santos Customs, flat rate | Specialised fences, value affected by damage |
| Planning | Fixed approach choices per heist | Freeform: scouting, secondary exits, masks, method |
| Endgame wealth | Protagonists become absurdly rich | Designed so being broke stays possible |
Common questions
Short, direct answers. Each one links to the section above that explains it in full.
Do you need money to progress the GTA 6 story?#
Yes. Rockstar has said players may need to raise a specific amount of cash before the main story advances, making earning a structural requirement rather than an optional pursuit.
How do heists work in GTA 6?#
Robberies range from store holdups to bank heists, taken on alone or as a couple. You choose between a fast escape and maximum value — blowing a safe is quicker but damages the contents, while cracking the combination preserves full value and risks police arrival.
How do you steal cars in GTA 6?#
Parked vehicles are tiered by security. Older cars need a slim jim with a timed minigame; modern luxury cars have electronic locks requiring key cloners. The WAINK phone app scans a vehicle for value, locks, alarms and GPS tracking first.
