You can't carry everything any more

Weapons

The biggest weapons change in GTA 6 is subtraction. You no longer carry an armoury in your pockets — and that one decision reshapes how every fight and every robbery is approached.

Short answer

How many weapons can you carry in GTA 6?

GTA 6 uses a limited loadout — you no longer carry every weapon at once. You hold one weapon in hand and can quick-swap between two firearms without opening the wheel, with the rest stored in vehicle trunks. Yellow targeting markers at joints allow non-lethal shots; red markers indicate lethal ones. Ammu-Nation returns as the main retailer.

The limited loadout

GTA 6 uses a limited loadout rather than carrying everything

Leaked

Leaked material and previews agree: you no longer carry every weapon at all times. You hold one weapon in your hands, with a small selection available on you.

Quick-swap between two firearms without the wheel

Confirmed

Official footage shows swapping between two guns directly, without opening the weapon wheel. That implies two ready weapons plus whatever is stored elsewhere.

The rest of your arsenal lives in vehicle trunks, which can store weapons and clothing Confirmed. Practically, this means loading out before a job rather than arriving with everything — and it makes your car part of your kit.

Why this is the right call

In GTA V, carrying twenty weapons meant every encounter had a trivially correct answer. A limited loadout makes preparation a decision, and turns a bad choice into a real problem.

The redesigned wheel

Weapons, equipment and gear are separated

Confirmed

The wheel has been redesigned to split the three categories rather than dumping everything in one radial menu. There is a separate item wheel holding gear including face coverings for robberies.

  • Taking a weapon from a downed enemy is faster and easier Confirmed
  • Certain weapons can be wielded one-handed Confirmed
  • There is an animation for concealing a weapon before entering a store Confirmed

Lethal and non-lethal targeting

Targeting markers
MarkerMeaningUse
RedA lethal kill shotStandard engagement
Yellow, at jointsA non-lethal disarm or incapacitateArms and legs — takes an enemy out of the fight without killing

Shooting an arm or leg incapacitates rather than kills, and an accurate shot can disarm an enemy outright Confirmed. There is also a slow-motion shooting ability with kill-cam footage, and particularly impressive acts of violence can trigger cinematic slow-motion angles.

This connects to reputation

Unnecessary violence damages your Criminal Profile, while violence a job actually required does not. The non-lethal tools exist so restraint is playable, not just admirable.

Weapons spotted so far

There is no official weapons list

Unconfirmed

Rockstar has not published one. More than 30 individual weapons have been identified across trailers, screenshots and promotional material, but identifications from footage are inherently approximate — the models below are described by what they resemble.

Ammu-Nation and buying weapons

Ammu-Nation returns as the main place to buy and customise weapons, confirmed across both trailers Confirmed. Most weapons are purchasable through its stores.

Trailer 2 featured a television commercial for Phil's Ammu-Nation, fronted by a dealer whose name and role lift directly from Phil Cassidy of the 3D-era games — notably with both arms intact. More on Phil →
