Reports of a decade-plus in production

Unconfirmed

Reporting has variously described GTA 6 as having been in some form of development for over a decade — which for a studio of Rockstar's structure usually means early concept and pre-production overlapping with the tail of another project rather than full production throughout. Rockstar has not published a production start date.

The more defensible statement is the one Rockstar made itself: active development was confirmed in February 2022, and serious production ran alongside and after Red Dead Redemption 2's post-launch period.

Technology

Built on RAGE, Rockstar's in-house engine

Unconfirmed

The Rockstar Advanced Game Engine has powered every Rockstar title since GTA IV. Rockstar has not published a version number or a technical breakdown for GTA 6, and has not held a technical presentation of the kind other studios use.

What the numbers suggest

  • 600,000+ NPC animations, individually art-directed rather than procedurally generated, against roughly 300,000 in RDR2 and 55,000 in GTA V Confirmed
  • Animations adapt to NPC body size, so characters of different heights and weights interact naturally Confirmed
  • 700+ enterable interiors Leaked
  • A map roughly double GTA V's playable area Confirmed

Performance

Unconfirmed

Reporting points to 30 fps on a base PS5, with no confirmed PS5 Pro performance mode. Rockstar has not commented. The Extended Look was captured on a PlayStation 5, which Rockstar stated explicitly — a deliberate move given how much scepticism followed the visually ambitious trailers.

The studio

Rockstar North, based in Edinburgh, leads development, supported by Rockstar's global studio network in the way every recent Rockstar title has been built.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, is the most visible development voice on GTA 6 and the source of the roughly 80-hour playthrough figure Official.

Design decisions Rockstar has explained

Confirmed

Two are worth recording. The game was reportedly built around four lead characters before collapsing to Jason and Lucia — which is why the switching system feels structural rather than bolted on. And the script deliberately avoids topical politics and viral trends so the dialogue does not date, a direct lesson from GTA V's rapidly-aging 2013 references.

The business context

GTA 6 is not just a game release — it is the single most consequential product launch in the industry, and that shapes decisions around it.

  • Take-Two's fiscal year ends 31 March 2027. A November launch keeps GTA 6 inside FY27, which the company has guided investors toward repeatedly
  • $79.99 standard pricing puts GTA 6 above the $69.99 that had become the console standard
  • No real-world product placement. Take-Two's CEO has confirmed every brand in the game is invented Official
  • The Netflix partnership for the Extended Look was a first — a distribution strategy aimed past the gaming audience
  • No online mode at launch, and no announced plan to discuss one soon, despite GTA Online being one of the most profitable products the industry has produced Confirmed
