Six changes that will break your GTA 5 habits
Thirteen years of GTA V taught a set of reflexes. Six of them are now actively wrong, and the Extended Look was fairly blunt about all six.
Short answer
What are the biggest gameplay changes from GTA 5 to GTA 6?
The six that change how you actually play: police respond to witnesses rather than to crimes; escaping does not end an investigation; you carry a small loadout instead of an armoury; vehicles have fuel and condition; money gates story progress; and the bond between Jason and Lucia is a system that changes scenes. Every one of these is confirmed in official Rockstar footage.
1. Crimes do not create wanted levels. Witnesses do.
This is the single change everything else in the police system hangs off, and it is genuinely without precedent in the series.
Law enforcement is only alerted when someone sees the offence
ConfirmedIn GTA V, firing a gun in an empty field could still start a chase. In GTA 6 someone has to actually witness the crime, and what the police then receive depends on what that witness could make out — your face, your clothing, or your vehicle.
The practical consequence is that every robbery becomes a question about sightlines before it is a question about firepower. It also means the outlined-versus-filled star distinction matters: outlined stars mean the police know a crime happened but hold no description of who did it.
2. Escaping is not the same as getting away
The scene stays an active police zone after you leave
ConfirmedLosing line of sight no longer clears the situation. Officers search the area before standing down, and they will surround a building and wait outside rather than storming it.
The GTA V reflex — drive two blocks, find an alley, wait for the stars to grey out — is the wrong instinct. What clears an investigation is changing what the police know: a barber for your face, a full outfit change for your clothing, a different car for your vehicle.
3. You cannot carry everything
A small carried loadout, with quick-swapping between two firearms
ConfirmedThe weapon wheel was redesigned around a limited set rather than an inventory. Masks and face coverings sit in their own separate wheel.
This is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's approach than to GTA V's, and it turns weapon choice into preparation rather than a menu you open mid-fight.
4. The car is a liability, not just transport
Vehicles have fuel and condition
ConfirmedCars degrade and need refuelling. Combined with the evidence system, the getaway car stops being disposable scenery: it is one of three things that can identify you, and swapping it is the cheapest of the three fixes.
5. Money gates the story
Cash is a requirement, not a score
ConfirmedFor the first time in the series, story progress depends on having money. Side work and robberies stop being optional content in the way they were in GTA V, where the campaign paid for itself.
Rockstar has not published the thresholds. What it has shown is that every robbery trades speed against value — longer inside means more taken and more chance somebody notices.
6. The relationship is a system
Bond strength changes certain story scenes
ConfirmedEither protagonist can text the other to spend time together. Shared workouts, shopping and downtime strengthen the bond, and the bond alters how some scenes play. The romance itself is optional.
GTA V's three protagonists never had a relationship you could invest in. Here it is the closest thing the game has to a reputation stat that points inward rather than outward. The outward-facing one is the Criminal Profile →
Nothing here is leaked
All six changes are visible in Rockstar's own footage — the trailers and the 26-minute Extended Look. This page reports no new information; it assembles confirmed material into one answer. How claims are labelled →
