Why $79.99 and not $69.99
GTA 6 launches at $79.99, ten dollars above the $69.99 that has been the standard for major releases this console generation. That is the headline the pricing conversation kept returning to when pre-orders opened.
The comparison worth making is not against other 2026 releases but against GTA V, which launched at $59.99 in 2013. Adjusted for US inflation, that is close to $80 in 2026 money — which makes GTA 6 roughly price-flat against its predecessor in real terms, whatever it feels like at the till.
That framing does not make it cheap. It does explain why Take-Two was willing to move first on the number.
