How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has never published a map size for any of its games, and it has not published one for Leonida. Here is every estimate in circulation, where each comes from, and which is worth believing.
Short answer
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has published no figure. Press estimates from people who have seen Leonida cluster around twice GTA V's playable area and roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2's landmass, with Vice City alone about twice the size of Los Santos. A separate, older claim of “70% bigger than GTA V” predates the Extended Look and does not reconcile with the newer estimates.
Every estimate, side by side
These are not measurements. They are what people who have seen the map say when asked to compare it to something, which is the only kind of figure that exists.
GTA V vs GTA VI
Measured, not vibes
Read the bars as ratios
Where Rockstar has published nothing, the bar is drawn from the best-sourced estimate rather than a measurement, and the label says which. The protagonist row is the one place GTA V is genuinely higher — three switchable leads against two.
Where each number comes from
| Claim | Source | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| ~2× GTA V's playable area | Press estimates after hands-off previews and the Extended Look | Confirmed |
| ~3× Red Dead Redemption 2's landmass | Same press estimates, different comparison point | Confirmed |
| Vice City ~2× Los Santos | Press previews of the city specifically | Confirmed |
| ~11× GTA V's populated space | Density estimate circulated after the Extended Look | Confirmed |
| 70% bigger than GTA V | Pre-Extended-Look claim, widely repeated | Unconfirmed |
| 700+ enterable interiors | Leaked material | Leaked |
| Any figure in square miles | Nobody. No such figure exists. | — |
The “70% bigger” number is the weak one
UnconfirmedIt circulated before the Extended Look and does not reconcile neatly with the newer “roughly double” estimates. Both are still being repeated. Neither is official, but the later one is based on more evidence.
Rockstar's own phrasing is “very big”
ConfirmedThat is genuinely as specific as the company has been. It has never given a square-mileage for GTA V, San Andreas or Red Dead Redemption 2 either — every figure you have ever seen for those was calculated by players after release.
Why area is the wrong question
A large map that is mostly transit is smaller, in the way that matters, than a dense one you keep stopping in. GTA V's map was substantially empty by design: the desert and mountains existed to give the drive between missions some shape.
The Leonida figures point the other way. Roughly double the area, but eleven times the populated space and a claimed nine-fold increase in interiors. That combination describes a map built to be entered, not crossed.
Roughly double the area. Around eleven times the populated space.
The practical consequence is that travel time is a bad proxy for scale here. The full county-by-county breakdown → · The interiors claim, examined →
Common questions
Short, direct answers. Each one links to the section above that explains it in full.
How many square miles is the GTA 6 map?#
No such figure exists. Rockstar has never published map dimensions for any of its games, and the square-mileage numbers quoted for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 were all calculated by players after release.
Is GTA 6's map bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2's?#
Press estimates put Leonida at roughly three times Red Dead Redemption 2's landmass, though Rockstar has confirmed no figure.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?#
Press previews estimate Vice City alone at roughly twice the size of Los Santos — before the rest of the state is counted.
Is the GTA 6 map 70% bigger than GTA 5?#
That claim predates the Extended Look and does not reconcile with newer estimates of roughly double. It is unconfirmed, and the later figures are based on more evidence.
